How did you start your journey as a poet?

My journey began with an introduction by Miss Nabilah Usman from the Purple Silver Poetry Community. She opened the door to spoken word for my classmates and me. I had always appreciated literature, but that moment was a true birthing experience for me as an artist. It was like discovering a new dimension to my love for words.

What was people’s reception to your craft when you started out?

I’d say it was very kind. I first shared my pieces with family and friends, and their support was overwhelming. Their encouragement played a huge role in motivating me to keep writing and performing.

Can you share a line or verse from a poem that holds a special place in your heart? Why does it resonate with you?

“Not everywhere you fit in is where you belong.” This line from my debut single, Sex is a Kind of Death (SIAKOD), resonates deeply with me. It’s a powerful reminder that while I may be accepted and liked in many places, I can’t and shouldn’t be everywhere at once. It speaks to the importance of finding your true place and purpose.

Your creative juices flow best when you’re…?

At rest. When I’m not worrying or overthinking, that’s when inspiration strikes and my creativity thrives.

If you could drop rhymes with any Nigerian artist (musician, poet, etc.), who would it be and why?

I would love to collaborate with TY Bello. She’s brilliant, and I believe our creative styles would complement each other beautifully. Her ability to blend music and visual art is something I deeply admire.

What are your hopes and dreams for your journey as a poet/spoken word artist?

I envision cross-genre collaborations that deeply impact people and reshape the way they think. I also hope to see my art grow and evolve as I do, reaching new heights and touching more lives.

Share a funny moment you performed on stage and what happened.

The funniest moments usually happen when I forget my lines on stage. The quick recovery and improvisation that follows often lead to some unexpected and hilarious outcomes!

Who do you look up to in your field or in the industry?

There are many incredible people I respect in the literary space. Lola Shoneyin and Titilope Sonuga are definitely two of them. Their work and dedication to the craft inspire me every day.

What will be your advice to other aspiring creatives pursuing a similar path?

Aggressively protect your sense of self-worth and identity. Remember that God treasures you regardless of how well you “perform”. Stay true to yourself and your art.
