Turning your passion into a career
If you’re a Nigerian, you’re probably aware of how challenging the labour market can be. Nothing prepares you for it.
One moment, you’re taking in what it means to be an adult and enjoying your freedom and in the next? In the next moment, you’re plunged deep into a world of emails and deadlines.
What’s worse is most of us do it because we have to, not because we want to. Don’t get me wrong; there’s nothing wrong with doing what you need to do, but greater pleasure is derived if you genuinely want to do it.
We need the extra cash and the experience so we don’t have to submit an empty CV when we become graduates or are left to deal with the impossible expectations of employers regarding expertise. (I mean, I am supposed to be schooling. How am I supposed to have six years of experience in the field?)
Now, as a creative, there’s a chance that you already make money from your passion, hobby, or talent (what you genuinely like to do), but probably as a side hustle. Picture yourself right now, An undergraduate or a recent graduate, working in a corporate organisation doing a corporate job but would instead be singing or painting or writing. You probably do already, but you don’t take it as seriously as your day job.
I’m here to tell you to pay more attention to your talent. Turn it into a career. And if you’ve already thought about that, I’m here with some tips to help you take that leap. Mind you, it can and will be challenging, but it is possible with the right mindset and approach and a platform like THE CREATIVES HUB.
1. Believe in yourself: Believing in yourself is the first step to turning your passion into a career. If you don’t believe in your abilities, no one else will. Be confident in your skills and knowledge with the awareness that you have something valuable to offer.
2. Find your niche: As a creative, finding your niche is essential. Understand what sets you apart from others in your field. What unique skills or perspectives do you bring to the table? Identify your niche and focus on building your expertise in that area.
3. Build your portfolio: A strong portfolio is essential for any creative looking to turn their passion into a career. Showcase your best work and ensure it’s easy for potential clients or employers to find and review. Be sure to keep your portfolio current as you complete new projects.
4. Network: Networking is crucial for any creative looking to turn their passion into a career. Attend industry events, join online communities, and connect with other creatives in your field. You never know who might be able to offer you an opportunity or introduce you to someone who can. For example, staying up to date with The Creatives hub and our numerous events and workshops is a great way to network.
5. Be persistent: Turning your passion into a career is rarely easy or quick. It takes persistence and dedication. Don’t give up if you face rejection or setbacks. Keep working hard and refining your craft; eventually, you’re working your way to success. Sell yourself like your future depends on it.
6. Be open to new opportunities: When you’re first starting, it’s essential to be open to new opportunities. Don’t be afraid to take on projects or jobs that may not be exactly what you want. These experiences can help you build your skills, network, and reputation.
7. Keep learning: The creative field is constantly evolving, so it’s essential to keep learning and growing. Take courses, read books, and stay current on industry trends. This will help you stay relevant and competitive in your field.
Remember, turning your passion into a career is a journey. It may take time and effort, but if you believe in yourself and stay focused, you can make it happen.
